Detailed question

Should I work to better my time or distance first? I Ran on a treadmill yesterday for an hour and made it 4.5 miles. I start out at a jog for the first 30 seconds, then up the speed slowly depending on how I felt. I don't want to wear my self out too quick. I started at 4mph then increased over time and ended at 5.2mph for the last 20min. My heart and lungs start to hurt before my legs give out so should I work on running a longer distance in a shorter amount of time? I know now I can run solid for an hour but I fear if I up my speed I won't be able to run as long. If I do this every other day do you think I will be ready for a 5K October 15th?

I don't have a trainer, I don't know where to find one or how much they would charge.
