Detailed question
I have a 1973 Yamaha CT-3 175cc two stroke I just restored and after changing the oil it has started an annoying problem. It will jump into neutral and everything I can do will not get it to go back into gear. I can feel it going through the gears when I step up and down on the shifter but nothing. The book says that means damage on the gears and the entire engine has to be disassembled to inspect them. Is it possible the new oil washed away the clutch friction material. Oh......last time after pushing it a few miles and playing with the shifter I was able to get it back into gear and ride it the last 1/4 mile home.
Clarification # 1
Guru: You mentioned that you just restored it. What did you do as part of restoration? Did you change / touch gears or shifter forks as part of restoration? Please give some more details.
Seeker: the engine was not touched except I opened the right side to add a shaft with the nylon tach gear on it. The problem existed before this. My restoration was mostly electrical, tins, screws, and oil injector assembly. The screws on the clutch are really knarled like someone had a hard time removing them. I have old clutch parts in my box.
