Detailed question

I just turned 34 but my Cholesterol numbers are very high since the last 3 years. I am originally from India and have a totally vegeterian diet. Indian cooking can be very oily and high on fat content. But my wife has controlled my diet very well since the first time my cholesterol numbers showed up on a wellness visit to the Doctor.

I admit that I am not exercising at all due to long hours on the computer (I am a software developer). But I think that my diet is very controlled with minimal oil / fat in it. I also started eating the plain Cheerios (made of oatmeal) for breakfast since past two months - they have an advertisement that challenges cholesterol reduction. But in all three years my annual wellness visit blood report shows the same cholesterol levels. LDL Cholesterol around 155 (very high) and Total Cholesterol around 240 (again, high) and HDL Cholesterol 54 (this one is good).

I think it is something hereditary and beyond my control. I don not want to take the regular cholesterol medicines and would prefer an alternative and a more natural cure. Somthing like prune juice that would work effectively to reduce cholesterol by being absorbed into the blood stream and telling my liver to produce less cholesterol while cleaning out my blood vessels of any cholesterol related plaque build-up.

I am willing to pay under $15 for an answer from an experienced Guru. Only someone who knows the cure that has worked for them should bid. For example, I don't mind taking a bitter fruit / vegetable juice on a daily basis provided its not an experiment and is a sure shot and proven cure.

Additional clarifications about the above question:

Clarification # 1

Guru: Is your waist circumferance > hip circumference? What is your hight and weight?

Seeker: My waist is 30 inches.
Height 5 feet 5 inches.
Weight 130 pounds.

Clarification # 2

Guru: OK I am not a physician but I do have fitness and nutrition background as well as personal experience..
my question is what is your triglycerides number
your HDL is good but not great a number of 60 or above is considered good
also a 155 LDL is not extremely high ..
Oily or fatty diet is not likely to cause your high cholesterol
what you need to control is carbohydrates of all kind even from fruit and vegetables..

Seeker: Triglycerides is 141 in the October 2008 reading. It was 124 in January 2007.
I did not know that there was a relation between carbohydrates and cholesterol. I am a vegetarian and apart from Indian vegetarian food, I also eat one fruit every morning around 8:30-9:00am on week days (apples 60-to-80% of the times). I also tend to eat another fruit around 3:30pm (banana / grapes / strawberries).
Again, I am not keen on taking medicines while still being 34 years old. I want to cure it naturally.
